Spring greetings to all members and potential members, from the Medal Society of Ireland (MSOI). New shoots are now being seen in our gardens and new growth is also visible in the society since the January Newsletter. The newsletters are the result of collaborative work of the MSOI officers. (Note: Society officers are listed on page 1 of the October 2020 journal). All of the officers invite you to contact them by email as part of our continual effort to improve the growth of communications within the Society.

We convey a special thank you to those members who have provided feedback on the January newsletter. In particular, thank you to those who paid their 2021 membership fees. If you do not pay by recurring Paypal please see details at end of this newsletter for other payment procedures. The fee remains the same, €20.00

Progress since January Newsletter

  • Zoom Communications

The MSOI successfully obtained a license for the use of the Zoom Communication platform, funded by the committee members. Thank you to all concerned. Planning has now begun for the implementation of a series of MSOI lectures. The first lecture is scheduled to take place around 15th March. The series will be opened by Pat Casey, President of the society, who will give a brief introduction on the history of the Medal Society of Ireland. This will be followed by one or two speakers on relevant topics. With this new Zoom communication tool we now need to put in place a panel of speakers for these future lectures.

The Society needs you! Volunteers for these lectures are required!

Being aware of the wide range of interests and knowledge of our members we seek your assistance. The proposal is for a short talk on your favourite medal / group of medals or military item. These lectures will be a method of achieving one of the aims of the society – the study of medals, badges, arms and armour and militaria in their various collecting forms. Please forward topics to Pat Casey: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

  • Photographic Quiz

With thanks to Paul Field of Bayonets and Bullets for creating the accompanying Photographic Quiz.

This is a "What Am I?" quiz.

There are 15 photographs. Identify each item and answer in the format

  1. ......
  2. ......
  3. ...... etc

Bayonets and Bullets has sponsored a prize for this inaugural quiz. Only paid up society members are eligible to receive the prize.

The conditions, per Paul, are that if 1 person gets the most correct answers, they win the full prize money of €25. If 2 or more get the highest number of answers correct, the prize money will be split.

The winner will be announced in the March newsletter or on the evening of the first lecture along with the full photographic solutions.

It is hoped that quizzes will form a regular fun part of the society events.
