New Year Greetings to all members and potential members, from the officers of the Medal Society of Ireland (Note: Society Officers are listed on page 1 of the October 2020 Journal)

Everyone is only too well aware of the current invasion of the COVID-19 and of the world’s efforts to control and eventually beat this virus. We, the officers of the MSOI, were of the hope that the war would have been won by now and we had only to cancel 2 or 3 of the Medals, Militaria and Collectables Fairs. In line with current medical and political opinions we now cannot see our next fair being scheduled until very late in the year or maybe in 2022. Our best socialising and communication to date took place at our fairs. We agreed at a recent virtual meeting to focus on new ventures to improve communication and focus on other areas of interest to members.

These are some of the proposals for the coming months. Your views are important to us so please share your thoughts with us so as to enable the Society to grow and prosper.
  • A regular newsletter; which will help to compensate for the absence of some of the excellent exchanges that took place at fairs in Knox Memorial Hall.
  • Research and utilise Zoom communications to enable virtual meetings.
  • Introduce new types of information meetings and lectures; for example, a session involving three members, one to talk about benefits of medal collection and how to do detailed research; two others to share and give history of some of their own precious medal collections.
  • Virtual fairs; members/dealers invited to display some items for sale / auction.
  • Virtual military table quizzes.

NB These activities will be available to paid up members only.

Members are requested to make recommendations by email on areas of interest to them which would make the Society more meaningful and interesting to themselves and other members. Please share your suggestions with any Society Officer by 14th February 2021.

Other items discussed:

Journal: There were expressions of approval and congratulations on the new colour version of the journal. Well done to all concerned. If you are a paid-up member and have not received Journal No. 103 October 2020, please email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

NOTE: this newsletter is not intended to replace the journal. As stated, it is hoped the newsletter will become a successful communication tool for the Society.

Articles for journal: Urgently required. Each publication is only as successful as the submissions. The next journal is due out in March. Originally researched articles should include references to sources, where relevant.

Award for Best Article of the Year 2020 in memory of the late Michael Denieffe, founder member of MSOI and his role in, and contribution to the society: The article chosen for 2020 was published in Journal No. 103 October 2020 titled “Captain John Dillon Mac Cormack (1891-1973)” by Liam Dodd. Congratulations to Liam, who will receive the prestigious MSOI medal.

Special reference was also made to the article by Richard M Clements titled “Military Casualties of the S.S. Connemara & Retriever Disaster”

MSOI Website: As you may be aware the website was down for a few days. It is now back up and functioning. Thank you, Michael.

Annual Subscriptions: Membership Fees are now Due

In the past, most members renewed their membership fees while visiting the fairs in Knox Hall. No fairs have meant less opportunity to pay membership fees.

You are asked, if you do not already pay by recurring PayPal, to either make a Paypal payment, send a cheque, make an online bank transfer or make a lodgement to the MSOI bank account. See details below. The fee remains the same, €20.00.

Please forward this newsletter to any person you believe may be interesting in becoming a member of the society.
