The Irish in WW1 - Review

Approximately forty people attended the talks given by Kevin Myers and Martin Staunton at the Knox Memorial Hall, Monkstown, on Saturday 23rd February, held under the auspices of the Medal Society of Ireland. Kevin Myers, in his usual accomplished style, demolished many of the myths that have grown up around the actions of the Irish Regiments during the war, and Martin Staunton provided much statistical data about the composition of the Irish Regiments and the number of casualties that they suffered during the course of the conflict.

All in all the two speakers provided a good round picture of the Irish involvement in the War, and the audience were given an all encompassing portrait of what transpired even down to details such as the court martials and executions that took place.

Our sincere thanks to our speakers for their time and effort. To Martin who flew home from Budapest especially for the occasion and to Kevin who came up from the short grass.

We hope to hear from them both again in the not too distant future.

Thanks also to D Buckley, D McKinley and P Casey for their excellent displays of militaria and medals pertaining to the Irish in the First World War.
