How Do I access the Lecture Recordings

Instructions for accessing the lecture recordings can be viewed in the Lecture Recordings Guide

What are the benefits of joining the Medal Society of Ireland?

Members receive published journals annually.  These journals are very useful reference items and make for very good reading on all matters related to militaria, medals etc.  In the journals, there is a strong emphasis on Irish material.  As a member, you have access to the members section of our website where you can search all the society journals by key word and submit Medal Re-Unite requests for publication online.  Other benefits of MSOI membership include a catalogue for any MSOI auction and reduced entrance fee to the quarterly fairs. Most importantly of all however is that membership opens up to the collector of Irish medals and militaria an opportunity to meet and network with fellow enthusiasts worldwide.

I’m not interested in military medals or militaria, is the Society still of benefit to me?

Yes, most definitely, MSOI caters for a wide range of collecting interests and beyond.  Many of our members are interested in areas such as collecting police memorabilia, civil awards for bravery, lifesaving and so on.  Some of our members have a specific interest in all matters relating to the Fire Service, Ambulance Service, Red Cross and indeed many of our members are interested in history generally or may be historians, or researchers. One thing they all have in common is a passion for the past.

How often does the Society meet?

We meet four times per year at the Knox Memorial Hall, 97 Monkstown Road, Monkstown, Dublin.  These meetings usually take place on the first Saturday beginning February and every 3 months thereafter, ie February, May, August and November.   Check website for specific dates as this schedule may change.

Do we only meet in Dublin?

No, not just in Dublin.  We usually try to have one event per year outside of the capital.  In recent years we have travelled to places such as Enniskillen, Kildare, Limerick and some time ago we held a very successful event in Birr.

I’d love if the Medal Society could stage an event in my own locality, is this possible?

Yes, we would be delighted to travel anywhere to put on an exhibition and or fair.  If you have any suggestions please ask any committee member.

What happens at the quarterly meeting?

The meeting usually takes the form of a fair.  When there is business of the society to be discussed, this will usually occur at the close of the fair. Reports are normally given by the secretary, membership secretary, treasurer etc.   Other meetings are also organised throughout the year which take the form of a short lecture or presentation on some topic.  Members are encouraged to give presentations on some aspect of their collecting or research.

Tell me about the Medal and Militaria Fair?

This usually precedes the quarterly meeting at about 10 a.m. in the same venue.  Usually somewhere between five and ten traders set up and a wide selection of medal and militaria is available to purchase, trade or exchange.

I am not a dealer, can I set up at the fair anyway?

Yes, of course.  Members are encouraged to put on displays or set up tables to trade, sell or swap their surplus items.  If you are not a member but want to trade some items anyway you are very welcome.  Anyone wishing to set up at a fair can do so by contacting the Military Fairs Advisor of the society at least a fortnight in advance of the event.
