Irish Crown Jewels Safe Returns to Dublin Castle

On Monday, 10 December 2007 an interesting chapter in Irish policing history was re-lived with the return to the Record Tower, Dublin Castle of the ‘Irish Crown Jewels’ safe - a position it occupied between 1893 and 1903.

The Irish Crown Jewels were the regalia of the Order of St. Patrick, founded in 1783. The jewels were presented to the Order by King William IV in 1831 and worn by the Lord Lieutenant on formal occasions. Their estimated value at the time was between £30,000 and £50,000.

Portarlington War MemorialThe war memorial to the men of this parish is small with only eleven names, there is also a family memorial which contains the name of a casualty of the Great War in the church. In the graveyard adjoining the church you will find one Commonwealth War Grave Commission site to a soldier who died at home in 1918, he is also listed on the memorial. On researching the eleven men on the memorial I found information on nine of them, wihich is listed below. The two I found no information on are H. McBride and A.H. Wright.

Very Late Recognition

SUNDAY TELEGRAPH  1 Nov  1992

A new headstone identifying a once unknown soldier as the only son of the poet Rudyard Kipling has been placed on a grave in a war cemetery in France, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission has announced. It marks the burial place of 18 year old Lt John Kipling of the Irish Guards, who was killed at the battle of Loos, near Arras, in 1915.

Wicklow Notes

A number of officers and men who formerly served with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers, travelled from the County Wicklow to the city last Monday for the purpose of taking part in the public unveiling of the Regimental Memorial in St. Stephen’s Green. The Wicklow contingent consisted of Col. O’Neill and a private named Kinsella.

Private Patrick Nolan, only son of the late Patrick Nolan and Mrs. Nolan, 3 Clifford Street, Wexford, now reported killed. Many years ago private Nolan adopted the career of a sailor, but finally settled in New Zealand. He married there, his wife being a native of Scotland.

Mr. Frank Fahy, speaker of Dail Eireann, presided yesterday at Leinster House at the first meeting of the body set up to administer the Deeds of Bravery Act. The meeting accepted a design for a bravery medal submitted by Mr. Richard J. King, 2 Vico Terrace, Dalkey, Co. Dublin and he was awarded the prize of 50 offered for competition.

Church of Ireland School, Dalkey War Memorials

This Church of Ireland school which first opened in March 1904 and is situated just out side Dalkey on the north side of the village on the way to Dun Laoghaire (Kingstown). The memorials to the past pupils who died in The Great War 1914-18 and the Second World War 1939-45 are set in two large rocks, in a small garden to the left of the school.

His Majesty the King has been pleased on the recommendation of the President of the Board of Trade, to award the Bronze Medal for Gallantry in Saving Life at Sea to Corporal (now Sergeant) William Thomas Watson and Corporal Harry Holmes formerly of a Reserve Battalion Royal Irish Rifles, in recognition of their services at the wreck of the Danish ship Fulvia of Svendborg in Dundrum Bay Co. Down on the 18th November 1916.

The Rev. Francis Browne S.J. whose death has occurred in Dublin, was born in Cork in 1880. He was educated at Belvedere College and Castleknock College and entered the Society of Jesus at Tullamore in 1897. Having studied philosophy at Chieri, Italy, he taught at Clongowes and Belvedere for seven years before beginning his theological studies at Milltown Park Dublin, where he was ordained in 1915 by his uncle, the Most Rev. Dr. Browne, Bishop of Cloyne.

Major-General Sir (Michael) Thomas Yarr F.R.C.S.I. late R.A.M.C. who died on Saturday 23rd April 1937 in a London nursing home at the age of 74, was distinguished in military ophthalmology. He was the son of Thomas Yarr J.P. of Rathgar, was educated at the French College Blackrock, entered the army in 1886 and retired in 1921.

Roll of Honour

The death occurred at the Adelaide Hospital Dubin on Saturday of Miss Sabina Farley Q.A., Q.N.S.E. late Matron of the Military Hospital Fermoy County Cork. Miss Farley had seen a good deal of active service. In addition to the Royal Red Cross, with which she was decorated by the King on October 24th 1917, for her services in the present war, she also held the South African Medal and Silver Badge. Miss Farley was a native of Carlow, a sister of Mrs J.B. Quinnell Edenburu, County Kerry and sister-in-law of the late Mr J.G. Glover Clerk of Carlow Union.

Second Lieutenant Harold D.E. Jones Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry, who has been wounded, is the only son of Mr & Mrs Hubert W Jones of Belmont, The Hill Monkstown, Co Dublin. He was educated at Monkstown Park School and Marlborough. He entered Trinity College Dublin in October 1914 and Sandhurst in April 1915 and was gazetted to the D.C.L.I. in September of the same year.

He was killed in Gallipoli on the 21st of August 1915 and was son of the late Lieut. Colonel George L. O’ Sullivan Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, left property of the value of £2915-4-10, probate has been granted to his brother George L. O’Sullivan of 9 Landfort Terrace Portsmouth England.”
